Plan B during LH surge

I feel hopeless and worthless. My boyfriend and I were having sex, and stupidly didn’t use protection. I was on top and he alleges that he pulled out as he felt the urge. I can’t remember if I was completely off his penis or not, but he did lift me up.I saw a bit of cum drip off my vagina. And there was semen on him. He said that if he did, he did not come very far into my vagina and thought it was right at the entrance. Being safe, I took a plan b 30 minutes later. My fertile window was supposed to start that day.

Being me, I googled thee effectiveness of plan B during ovulation. The official page says that it can work, some reviews even attested to it. But there’s so many articles saying it won’t. I then took a ovulation predictor kit that said I’m at my LH peak. I give up. He is trying to calm me by saying it wasn’t much if he did, wasn’t deep etc, and he smokes everyday(for the past 4 years) so his sperm is not good. But I can’t rely on that when my future is so affected!

We both are in masters programs and can’t foresee having a kid now. We are long distance, at that.

Anyone take plan b during ovulation and beat the odds?
