Military Wife Help!?

So my husband will be finishing AIT with the Navy in about a month. They’ve given him Norfolk, Virginia as his duty station, and I believe he has to report there on November 29th. I’m literally lost. What exactly is the process for the first PCS move? How long did it take y’all to find somewhere to live? How soon will we be able to join him? Literally any information will be helpful! 🤗

You’ll follow on immediately (as soon as movers are in place). 
I’m in the city next to Norfolk (won’t say exact location unless you would like to PM me and talk). I would recommend just living on base housing unless you’re able to afford a really nice subdivision that has good ratings, which may be hard if you’re only wanting to pay for rent with BAH and nothing more than that. The housing market here is substantially high. The crime rates here are RIDICULOUS. Shootings, home invasions, robberies, etc happen daily, sometimes even multiple times a day. If you google “Norfolk shooting” there’s an article for a deadly shooting nearly everyday this past month. The MacArthur (Norfolk) mall just had a shooting 4 days ago. There was an attempted kidnapping at the VA Beach Walmart a few weeks ago. A lot of people in this area are off their rocker and up to no good. 
I’m not saying any of this to scare you. I just want you to be self aware of the crime rates and vigilant in choosing a home... Do some serious digging about crime in the area you’re interested in, the school zone, the surrounding area, etc. I would still recommend living on base though versus being in the city as far as the safest option goes. We’ve been here for three years and we cannot wait to leave this area.

Not navy but Marines for my husband. After he finished his school I was able to join him right away, we took a month to look at houses for rent in the area and pick one out we both liked, after that he put in a request to help get everything moved and it got approved in a few days, we had a week to do everything

You should be able to go with him, joining immediately. Are you moving yourself for having the military move you? Finding a place to live depends on if you're living on post/base or not.
