Can my GP renew my old antidepressants prescription?

I was diagnosed with depression when I was 17 & prescribed medication, however I stopped taking them not long after bc I was scared I would become dependant on them. 
I'm now 21 & feel as tho my mental is suffering horribly, the last few months especially, and I really think I should go back on them. 
Will I be able to go to my GP & have them renew my prescription or will I have to go through a psychiatrist?

When my father was on antidepressants, his GP was the prescriber. He was on them for 1-2 years during his mid-20s. They helped bring his depression into a more manageable realm, so he could focus his energy, not on just keeping his head above water, but on being able to learn strategies to help manage his life and his depression. Eventually he didn’t need the meds anymore, and he credits that time with getting him ready for parenthood. 
Meds are a tool. They can be as a short-term lifeline, or they can be used as part of long-term management strategies. If you need them, use them. There is no shame in that.
