How long does your baby nurse for?

Just wondering as I have always used a nipple shield when breastfeeding my daughter, how long does your baby usually take to feed? Now I have started not using a nipple shield and it seems she only wants to be on the boob for max 15 min. When I use a nipple shield she used to take anywhere from 30-45 minutes. I know she’s getting older and maybe more efficient when eatting but there’s a part of me wondering if 10 minutes of feeding is getting her full? She seems content

Nipple shields can hinder how effective baby’s nurse. So if you’re starting to go without it, she can probably nurse to her full potential and is getting milk in a shorter period. My daughter did the same thing. As long as she is having a normal output of diapers and gaining weight, some baby’s can definitely get enough milk in 10 mins, some even less.

This is a log of my baby’s nursing times from yesterday. We currently use a shield but I wish we didn’t have to.

Depends on the age but my son has always been a very efficient nurser. He nursed for 5-10 minutes as a newborn and young infant. It is quite possible the nipple shield was slowing down her feeds.

8-15 minutes.  We’ve done weighted feeds and I know he gets about 4 oz in that time period and he gains 8-20 oz a week so I know he’s well fed in that short time.  He’s become a very efficient nurser 😂

My son took 6 months to come off the nipple shield, and I was worried about how short the feeding were after we stopped using the shield, but he was actually gaining more weight than he was when on the shield and I noticed a supply increase when pumping. I think it just takes more time to transfer milk with a shield. (He’s 4 now and went on to breastfeed until 2.5)
