Is my bf being a douche?

So during my boyfriends senior year in college about 2 years ago he decided that every Wednesday is game night with him and his friends to play Xbox live all night. Well he is the ONLY friend who still religiously dedicates Wednesday’s to game night. He gets on regardless if his friends are on or not.  I was only ok with game night if I got a date night in return, which I did for a while. Now that he isn’t in school and working full time with me in school and working our schedules don’t always add up and we never have time to do anything meaningful. So my friend just got into her first relationship and she’s been asking me to double date with her and her new boyfriend and so she asked me out to dinner tonight with him and he literally won’t go because it’s game night... let’s get this straight too, game night is not the only night he plays games a week, it’s the only night that I have “no choice”. When I mentioned our schedules don’t add up, I have to work some nights. So not only do I not see him on Wednesday night pretty much, but the nights I work too. And I just can’t understand WHY he can’t move game nights to a day that works for me too? Like is he just being a douche? I always ask him but he never gives up because “I know when game night is”

My advice might not be the best to take because I have a serious problem with anyone over the age of 12 dedicating any kind of time to video games. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous. If your schedules are this difficult to line up and Wednesday happens to be a night that you guys can so so etching, you should be a priority over some stupid game. I would be furious.

Idk. I kinda see his side. I have a day set aside for my friends and every tuesday we go get Mexican food. It’s been every single Tuesday for the past 2 years. My husband has known this and still try’s to make plans for us on Tuesday. If it’s something simple like a double date that can be any night of the week I can see why he’d tell you to pick another day. Obviously if something more pressing or serious came up on a Tuesday (funeral, large event that can’t be moved etc) I’d cancel dinner with my friends. Otherwise no.

I hate video games. My main problem is that when someone plays them, it's hardly ever for an hour. I would tell him that if he is going to say that Wednesday night is his game night, fine. He can't play video games any other time you're home unless you're both interested in partaking in an individual activity. My husband plays video games so I get it.

I get his view point but honestly he's being childish. He should put aside his "game night" for a date night, especially  if his friends don't really play with him on that allotted day anymore. And especially if he still actively plays during the week as well!
My SO and I live together and we game together but NEVER do the games or him playing with his friends come before us and our relationship together. We still make significant time for each other and still put in effort for each other even after 6 years.
If he doesn't make time for you and the relationship you have together... then maybe it's time to give him an ultimatum and msybe it's possibly time for you to move on with your life and find someone who makes the time and effort to also live in the moment with you.

I love video games!! I play them with my husband and it's a feeling blast. I think it sounds like he loves Wednesday being game night and it's something he looks forward to. You might have to suck it up and just know that Wednesdays are off limits for plans. I can see both sides.

I can see it from both sides. My husband has “man night” every Tuesday with his friends, and I get why. It’s his one night a week he can just chill, hang with the guys, have a beer, and not have to worry about responsibility, sometimes you just need a break. I respect his man night and try not to schedule things on a Tuesday, unless I absolutely have to. For example, I’m pregnant with our first child and the hospital I’m giving birth at only did their tours of the maternity ward on a Tuesday. Obviously I’d want my husband there for the tour so he not only knows where to go but also what to do. My husband also understands though that things can come up where he’ll need to either reschedule man night or skip it altogether.  If he told me no for the hospital tour to do man night  I’m pretty sure I would have murdered him lol 
If you need to schedule something on his game night, is there a reason he can’t move his game night to another night? Especially since from your post it sounds like he plays with or without friends and without friends it’s much easier to rearrange your own schedule when given advance notice.

My boyfriend always has a game night and doesn't cancel it unless he has to work out of the blue so I guess I'm understanding of what hes doing in your post 🤷
Between my work and school, and his working 80 hours a week and game and all that, we see each other a few hours on one, maybe two days per week. We don't live together yet though.
