Should I get the NIPT?

I don’t know if I should do the NIPT. I’m stressing out about it because I wouldn’t do anything differently if we got a positive for chromosome abnormality, but I’m afraid to announce my pregnancy because what if I miscarry later on?
It seems like everyone is doing it but I’ve heard of false positives that caused unnecessary stress.
I would be considered low risk. I’m 21 with absolutely no history of genetic disorders in my family or my husband’s.
I’m 12 weeks pregnant and so far baby is doing great and my pregnancy is very healthy.

I’ve gotten it done with two of my babies. It’s just a simple blood draw and the bonus is getting to find out the gender early. Even though you wouldn’t change anything if something is wrong, it can better prepare you emotionally and financially if something is wrong. It’s important to know if certain abnormalities are present so you can also better prepare for a NICU stay if necessary or even deliver at a hospital better equipped to handle certain conditions your baby may have.

I’m 24, he’s 28. We have zero risks that would lead us to testing, we opted out. The result would never have changed our minds. Our Dr has to offer it, but he doesn’t recommend it. Basically due to the high false positive rate.

Honestly if you feel like it would stress you out I wouldn't do it. I didn't want to do it for the exact same reason. I'm 22 and there's no concerns on either my side or my husband's side but we did it anyways I was so worried the whole time waiting for the results.

Based on the info you just gave, it’s unlikely your insurance would even cover it.

At 21 I dont know that it would be necessary for you. Insurance probably wont cover it, so it really would be a personal choice. We are doing it because I'm 35 and it IS covered. That's the only reason. I do want to know my likelihood of abnormalities, but we are declining the gender information. If insurance didnt cover it, we wouldn't be doing it.

I didn’t do the NIPT test because it’s not covered by my insurance and I didn’t want to pay out of pocket. I’m 30 and I have 2 healthy kids, I’ve also had 2 miscarriages. I’m also high risk for preeclampsia.
Instead, I had the nuchal translucency ultrasound and blood work done. It also checks for trisomy and chromosome issues but it’s not as invasive. The ultrasound checks the back of the baby’s neck fluid and nose bone. It’s done between 11-14 weeks, so if you wanna do that I would contact your doctor soon! Mine was completely covered by insurance. I did NOT find out the gender with it.
