Should a parent control a child's hair style?

I have a little brother age 11 and nowadays it is in style for them to have long hair to their shoulders. My mother hates it and threatened to sit him down and zip tie his hands in a barber chair and cut off his hair to a shorter hair cut because she does not like his hair and he refuses to cut it. I told her if she ever did that I will never bring my children around her again because that is some Hitler type shit. Children don't have control over much and see their hair as a part of their identity and you need to respect that. The child isn't an extension of you but rather their own person, and if they know you refuse to respect them and their opinion (something like their hair, we aren't talking about big decisions here) they will hate you now and when they grow up. What do you guys think?

Any child old enough to say how they want their hair should be allowed to wear it how they want. It’s a huge part of someone’s identity and it won’t last forever. Let the child be

No. I don’t think parents should force their own style ideas onto their children, whether it’s hair styles or clothes. 
My nephew is 8 and wears the weirdest clothes. But he loves choosing his own clothes and it gives him so much confidence.

I think as long as a child is living under their parent’s roof, the parents have a say. 🤷🏼‍♀️. I won’t allow my boys to have long hair. If they want it as adults after they move out, they can have at it. While they’re in my home, they’ll live by my rules.

As long as it’s clean and he’s meeting all of his expectations (going to school, decent grades, helping out around the house, etc.), and is behaving appropriately, I say let him have his long hair. Pick your battles.

My own Mother is still scarred to this day about her own hairstyle because her Mother refused to buy her conditioner in order to stop her from growing her hair longer, she cut it all really short and told her she cannot maintain long hair therefore it needs to be kept short & my Mum hated her hair short.

If your mother simply doesn’t like the hairstyle, she would be dead wrong. How odd. At 12, I can’t imagine having a parental presence threaten to physically alter a part of my body without my consent. Here was the flipside I wondered about. My son is a tween and he loves longer hair￼￼. However, he and I have an agreement that he wash his hair and comb it and stuff, so it doesn’t stink and harbor birds nests, etc lol. I would never force him or restrain him to enforce this though. Kids deserve a level of independence and freedom. Your mom may not realize how her behavior will push her kids away, no trust.

Right now my oldest is 6. I let him choose his hair within reason. If it gets long I ask if he wants me to cut it. Some times he will say no sometimes he'll say yes. He goes back and forth on what he wants. We even go to Pinterest to pick out a hairstyle sometimes. I've given him a mohawk before and I've dyed his hair red. (I was dying mine red and he wanted to match. So I thought whatever. I can shave it off if anything.) 
My mom never let me do anything to my hair. I couldn't dye it, cut it my way or cut it really at all. It was down passed my ass when I was 8 and I had to move it to pee. And I have thin hair so it tangled so bad. One day I told her either you cut it or I will. I don't want it long anymore. So she cut it to the middle of my back. As an adult I hate my hair long. It's pretty but it tangles very easy and I don't care to deal with it. I've also told my husband that I don't care what the kids do to their hair. It's just hair. But they have to understand that if they get too crazy society won't like it and they have to not be upset if some old lady decides to give her opinion.

If my child is willing to actually take care of their hair (brushing it regularly, getting a trim when needed, etc.) Then they can have whatever style they want. If they have hair down to their ass but refuse to take care of it, my so (who knows how to do hair) will end up cutting it off. 🤷 
My step son is 4 and will tell his dad that he needs a haircut once it gets to a certain length lol, but we don't cut it till he says he wants it cut. My other son is nearly 8 months so it'll be a while before he tells us what he wants.

Children, being children, should have their preferences taken into consideration. Their preferences may be accommodated if within reason.
