Weight training, please help!

So to begin with I'm a bit overweight and want to workout my legs and butt. I've seen those "cardio vs. weight" pictures on pinterest and such and my questions are

1. Do resistance bands work as a sort of 'weight' because I dont have a gym membership :( or what can I use in place of one?

2. I've heard that you should uptake your protein and calorie intake for weight training but does that work since win already a bit overweight? Would I just keep gaining weight and can I take protein shakes?

I would really appreciate any of the help I can get because I've only seen weight training pictures for people that were underweight before and very skinny
