Do you think we should get paid for all of our maternity leave?

I get paid for the full 2 years maternity leave I took. Not a full salary, but enough to get by. And yes, I think the same should be done in other countries. Having children and caring for them should be promoted, not made impossible.

I'd love to hear from the people who voted "no." Curious as to why they don't think mothers / parents should be paid. 
I get full salary for 6 weeks before due date and 8 weeks after birth. Then about 2/3 of my salary (or up to a max of €1.800/month) for a year. So we get money until baby is 14 months old. If we want to stay home longer we get half that money for twice the time. I'm in Germany.

I think it's a wonderful idea and would be so nice. But where would the money come from? Is that the company? If so then no. It shouldn't be mandatory. 
Maybe some sort of regulation according to the size of the company? Like a small family run convenience store isn't going to be able to shell out the same benefits as, say, Walmart. But I could get on board with a reasonable percentage going towards things like maternity or paternity leave.
But I still have a hard time because if I'm home with my baby, I'm not making them any money so why should I get paid?
Personally, I'm just happy if I get my job back after a 3 month absence.

Also to add. The first year or two of a child’s life is the most important. When they are developing so quickly and this is when they need care the most from their parents. I think it’s ridiculous that the United States doesn’t require any maternity leave.

Yes but if the US changed and gave mothers a year of maternity leave I personally don’t think they should get the full amount of what they’re typically paid when they actually work. I also think fathers should get longer maternity leave because I feel like that would give them time to bond with their kids and would also give them the ability to help the mom out if she’s having a hard time recovering after birth.

FMLA leave should be paid in general. Needing to be off work for your health shouldn’t require a huge stretch financially.

Yes and no. I don’t think you should just get paid to stay home. If I had that, I would be paid for 5/6 straight years with how many kids we have. Other countries have that bc their taxes are so much higher it’s hard to ‘justify’ that....we get taxes so high as it is, we’d have to significantly raise the taxes here to be able to do that and have universal healthcare

Yes? I’m not sure about the question. Here in Canada you get either 12mos at 55% of your salary or 18mos with the same amount stretched over that time.
