Possible unpopular opinion
If you cheated on your partner, you don’t always need to tell them. Now before you twist my words let me say this. If you honestly, really truly care about their feelings you can leave them without causing an unnecessary blow to their ego, and potentially messing up how they see themselves for the rest of their life. If it was a one time thing and your partner couldn’t possibly find out, just leave. When they ask why, just say you’re not ready for a relationship, because you aren’t. Consider why you cheated in the first place, look into some therapy if you can, but why hurt someone else because you did something inadequate? Seriously. I’m not saying this should be done in every situation at all. I’m just saying that sometimes coming clean is ineffective. Yeah, you got it off your chest, your conscience is clean. But what about the other party? Now you leave them stuck trying to figure out what they did wrong, when really it’s all on you.
