Anyone do gental parenting?

We don't believe in spanking. But have a very strong willed 2 year old. He doesn't care about time out. Tried getting on his level and telling him what he did wrong and what he could do next time. Any other tips on how to get through these terrible 2s!?

First and foremost, stop calling it the "terrible two's". I can't stand that. Your child isn't terrible. He's a child and he's learning. It's your job as a parent to be teaching him. Second, it's great to get down on his level and speak to him like a human being, but giving him a long-winded explanation on what he did wrong and what he can do next time isn't doing anything for you. It's all going over his head. He's 2. You need to break it down much simpler than that. Our daughter is 2 as well and currently has a habit of screaming when she doesn't get her way or she'll hit our hand if we try to take something from her. Changing that isn't an overnight thing. It's developmental. So rather than punishing her for being 2 and not knowing how to handle those feelings, I sit down with her and I tell her how that action made me feel. For example, I'll tell her it made me sad when she hit me. I'll also point out the emotions she's feeling as well so she's better able to recognize those emotions. I continue this even when she's not upset. If we're watching a show I'll ask her how a certain character feels to let her practice identifying those things. We also teaching coping mechanisms. If she's angry, we'll say something like "when we're angry, we can take a break" (we don't call them "time outs". They're breaks and we fully encourage them when needed). Or if she's sad, I could say something like "when we're sad, we can give hugs or ask for cuddles". Rather than focusing on what she did wrong, we focus on what she could do with that emotion instead. And we don't discourage crying here either. If she needs to take a few minutes to sit there crying, she's more than welcome to. Same with yelling (to an extent). Sometimes we all just need to let out the anger or frustration. But we also provide her with appropriate coping mechanisms like hugs or time to herself or whatever it may be. The way you communicate with your child is huge. And at this age, they just need help identifying, communicating, and processing emotions.
