I dye my hair to cover grey (I have a lot) so I have to do root touch ups. I am considering doing it at home myself, it would cost a little less. Do you do your own or go to a salon?

Dyeing my own hair I would want a good quality dye. Any recommendations?

I have been a colorist for 15 years and have had clients who have needed to cut down on costs. I tell them what to buy from Sally’s that is the closest to their formula and educated them on how to mix and apply the color. 
I believe it is my job to keep my clients educated on hair care and I don’t want anyone to suffer because they can’t afford me. 
All that to say, don’t do box color! If you decide to do it yourself, it’s better to go a shade lighter then too dark. Keep it on root area for the majority of the time and pull it through the ends for the last ten min if you need a refresh, so as not to damage your hair and keep your color even.

I’ve done both. It just depends on what color you’re going for, if it requires any type of lightning the hair or bleaching, salon 100% but if it’s all one color, I usually buy the dye from Sally’s because they have some products that don’t damage your hair like the box colors will.

I do my own, but I went to cosmetology school years ago and use the professional dyes when I do it.
If you end up doing it yourself, please do not use box dye.

I think it probably depends on what kind of color you usually get and how many steps it usually takes to color your hair.. I would just ask your regular stylist for a product or dye suggestion, and more importantly what not to do.. he/she may help you avoid making a mistake that takes more time and money to fix.

I always go to the salon. I trust them more than I trust myself 🤷‍♀️ the first time I went, I paid $200+ for an ombre. The next time, I went to a different salon to get the exact same ombre (after years passed) and it cost me $75.. You just gotta find the right salon and stick with it!
