Question for vegans/vegetarians?
I have no problem with vegans or vegetarians I completely respect their choice for their lifestyles. I realize there is a huge range for why they choose their lifestyle, some against killing animals and others for health reasons.
One of my good friends throughout high school and after became vegan 3 years ago after high school. I was completely supportive with her decision. I went to vegans restaurants with her, when she came over for dinner I made sure I had a vegan options so she would be able to eat with everyone. I even went to some protest she asked me to go to even though I knew pretty much nothing of what they were protesting but went for support for her.
Overtime her vegan beliefs got stricter and stricter including refuses to eat a meal at the same table others are eating meat, eggs, dairy or any animal products. That alone put a wedge in our friendship because me and my husband often did dinner parties and bbqs with our group of friends including her. Having vegan options and including meats so everyone had something they wanted to eat wasn’t good enough anymore. She refused to come to our parties unless the whole meal was vegan and she didn’t have to be around animal products at all. Most of our friends are meat eaters including my husband and I, so meat was something we wanted to serve, so she stopped coming.
I kept the friendship even though hanging out fell fewer and farther in between. I did just go to her home with a lot of her new vegan friends for a party. There is a video online of a debate between vegans and meat eaters that they were discussing. One of the topics that came up in the debate is would you kill a animal to save a human. In the video one of the vegans said no and they he wouldn’t even kill a animal to save his own life but he would kill a human to save animals life. This struck me as weird since I would expect vegans would value a animals life and humans life the same so killing a human to save a animal would be just as wrong is what I would expect their opinion to be. Her and her friends started discussing what the man in the video said and they agreed with him. When I asked them why they would kill a human to save a animals life but not a animal to save a humans life, they said because the animals need our help and are already being killed in mass numbers where humans don’t need saving and if they put themselves in a situation to be attacked by a animal then that’s their fault for being in the animals territory.
This struck me as a odd way to think although I understood what they were saying I didn’t agree with the logic.
What’s your opinion on killing a animal to save a human life VS. killing a human to save a animals life?
Edit- here is a few scenarios this has come up. In Florida there was a 2 year old who was eaten by a alligator at a resort, if I was there and had a chance to rescue that child even if that meant I had to kill the alligator I wouldn’t hesitate.
I grew up in the mountains with mountain lions and coyotes and saw them regularly on our property. I’ve never been attacked and either has my family. If one ever did attack me or my family I wouldn’t hesitate to do what I had to do even if that meant killing the mountain lion.
