Depo Shot

I just got my first Depo shot the first day of my period. my gynecologist said if you get the shot during your period your less likely to experience breakthrough bleeding, however i got the shot and the next day my period ended. so i only had my period for like 2 days. is this normal? i also had unprotected sex after my period ended and i just want to know how long before the shot takes effect.
