I did once an enormously long time ago. I think I was 18, so it was 20+ years ago. They were having a Sadie Hawkins dinner for Valentine's Day at the college I was attending, so I decided to screw up my tiny amount of courage and ask him to go with me. I was too paralyzingly shy to ask him face to face, so, playing to my one great strength I wrote a story, complete with illustrations, about a princess who really liked this guy and wanted him to be her date for the Valentine's Day dinner, but was too shy to ask him. It ended with the option to check yes or no for the date, much like the old George Strait song. I almost died of nerves and stress when I dropped it into his mailbox. Then I waited. And waited some more. And some more.
I would love to tell you that he said a resounding yes and it all went perfectly and we lived happily ever after, but it didn't quite work out that way. Unfortunately for me, another girl who was much more popular and confident than me asked him before he got my story. He was very nice about it and let me down very gently, telling me that the story I wrote was the most unique invitation for a date he had ever received and that if he had been free, he would have said yes. Then he walked me to my dorm and told me to say hi to him if I saw him around campus. It's a pleasant memory now. 
If you want to ask your crush out, do it. Be creative, be straightforward - do it in the way you think is best. Guys do it all the time and it's no easier for them than it is for us. I think they appreciate the effort when a girl asks them out. Good luck!

I went for it 3 almost 4 years later we still together with 2 kids and married, I simply send him a text not all flirty but a simple text asking how he was ect.... little by little we got to know each other each day I didn't jump straight to asking him out I wanted to be sure what I wanted first with him by getting to know him same with him he wanted to get to know me first before asking me on a date and being his gf ,it's all about communicating and being friends first before jumping into a relationship that maybe wont last
