Toilet training

So my LO is 3 next month (and currently pregnant now) so we've been try to toilet train him (would have done it sooner but atm hes in speech therapy as he only says words and now whole sentences) it's hard to train him as he can't tell us when he wants a wee or poo, but he knows what both of these are, he was good when we first got his potty a few months ago he would always want to use it to the point of where we had to hide it one night because he kept straining to go for a poo on it...but over Christmas we all slacked as we live away from family and went to see them for a few weeks, now getting him back into is hes just completely lost it, when we have our days in I would either leave him with no nappy on your put some pants on him so he understands that's what he would be wesr soon, so every time I will say need a wee use potty ( trying my best to keep it simple for him) he knows when hes weeing cuz he will show me that hes wet himself and then he will go and sit on the potty, I say good boy for sitting on the potty but you wet, when you wee use potty. He knows how to use it cuz he used it the other night for a poo and a wee.

I'm just getting to the point in giving up for a bit cuz clearly hes not ready and doesn't fully understand what I'm saying to him but then the other part is saying keep at it cuz he will get here in the end.

Is there any other techniques or strategies that people have used for their child?
