I’m 25 and my my mother got diagnosed with breast cancer at 50. Should i be getting screened? I’m not sure how to even go about this? My mom said I should?

Also, if your mom gets any genetic testing done you should consider getting tested as well. My aunt had colon cancer young and I ended up meeting with a genetic counselor to see if I should get tested. My aunt didn’t end up having any known colon cancer genes but had a breast cancer gene. The risk is low so I opted out for now but my OB wants me to get a mammogram sooner than later to get a good baseline image. I’m so sorry your mom was diagnosed with cancer. Hope she does well with treatment and it’s just a little bump in the road of life. I’ll be thinking of your family!

My aunt died of breast cancer when she was 26. I'm 24 and my doctor does an exam when I go in. I haven't gotten a mammogram yet.  But you should get exams and learn to do them yourself.

Yes you should. You talk to your doctor and tell them you want to be screened. My dad had cancerous colon polyps at 42 I get colonoscopies every five years if normal since I was 25. You have to be an advocate for yourself unfortunately!

Usually for non genetic linked breast cancer they have you start mammograms 10 years before your mother's age of diagnosis. So if she was diagnosed at 40 then you would start at 30.

My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer a few weeks after my baby boy was born. She tested positive for the BRCA2 gene so my brother and I also had to get tested. He tested negative but I was positive. I will be have my kids pretty close in age and then I will have a double mastectomy and a hysterectomy by mid to late 30’s (I’m 28). If you can...go get tested. If my mom knew she had this gene we wouldn’t be going through what we are right now 😢

Being that your mother had breast cancer, you will begin mammograms at the age of 40. For now, do self-exams and see a doctor if you find anything abnormal. Also see your doctor on a yearly basis

My mom had cervical and breast cancer and my grandma had breast cancer as well. I get checked by my doctor yearly as it’s possibly genetic.
