Would you pay them for the eighteen years?

You own a business that is worth over a million dollars. Your parents come to you saying they want money, and say you shouldn’t have a problem with it since they spent eighteen years raising you. 
Would you pay them back for those eighteen years?

I would write them a check and say “here’s for the 18 years i “owe you”. Then I would cut them out. If they are toxic enough to expect to be paid for being a parent then they don’t deserve to be in my life. I’m all for helping family, but they shouldn’t expect it.

No. That was their basic responsibility as a parent. If you have a good relationship with them and they were good to you, it might not be a bad idea to help them out occasionally. But you are under no obligation to pay them back

My husbands mom always throws it in his face that she “had to raise him” and spent all this money on food and shelter and clothes. It’s absolutely ridiculous because she’s the one that chose to have him. Also, my husband is now a successful real estate agent and we make really good money (not even close to millionaires) but a lot more then all of our family. And they always expect us to pay for everything and give them extravagant gifts. But he works SO hard for that money. He should be able to use it on himself and family shouldn’t expect him to just hand it out to them.
