If it's said in the heat of the moment, do they mean it?

No matter what the argument or disagreement is about, if someone says something to you about how they feel about you or a situation and when they're calm they say it "was in the heat of the moment" is that true or do they just regret letting it slip out?

I believe when you say something in the heat of the moment it's something that you've been keeping to yourself or had on your mind but are too afraid to say. In the heat of the moment things slip out and no matter how bad you feel after you say it theres a large chance that you did mean it but would never have said it otherwise.

No, people say things that are to hurt the other people when they're arguing. Doesn't mean they mean it, they just want to be hurtful

Yes and no.
Sure, sometimes the hidden deep truth comes out in anger.
Other times we are just being jerks and trying to hurt our partners as deeply as possible to win an argument.
I've done both. I've experienced both. Anyone who tells you "yes always" or "no never" is speaking from some personal bitterness or guilt. Dont believe them.

I agree that there must be some shred of truth when things are said in that way because otherwise it never would’ve been said. I also believe that saying you didn’t really mean something after you’ve said something truly hurtful, is Nothing more than manipulation and gaslighting. So regardless of whether or not someone says they didn’t mean something, they are still accountable for it.
