discipline ?

how do you mamas discipline your 12 month olds? i know everyone does different stuff. my daughter doesn’t seem to know or maybe care when i say no or stop so i’m not sure what to do when she repeatedly does something i’ve said no to many times. do you take away toys? go in timeout? let me know!

Don’t overuse no or stop. At this age, distract them. You want “no” and “stop” to mean something, for emergencies. (I try, instead of saying stop when he is leaving the room, I say, “stay with mommy” and it actually works!) Also, be aware that transitions are hard. I try never to pick up my kid at random from behind. I face him, tell him we are all done, say bye bye, and up, and then I pick him up. It’s not always perfect but it is always better. Talk to them as much as possible with more than no or stop. Or sometimes you just have to distract or remove but you can do it in a nice way. Time outs don’t work yet, not much does really - discipline is really mostly beyond their scope at this point. Lucky us! Remember that they understand language more than it seems.

Also show her the behavior you want instead. This might be distraction, but it might also be like, instead of telling her no when she pulls your hair, show her how to gently stroke hair and tell her “gentle.” And also, if there is something you don’t want her noticing or getting into never do it in front of her (if you can help it - if not, liek our trash for example we have to use - that’s what child proofing is for lol). One more thing I can think of is some behavior is just better ignored (obviously not stuff that might hurt her). She loves strong reactions from you, bad and good. So if she throws food don’t make a fuss. You can get her out of the seat or take away the food but don’t bother explaining why or make a big deal. Next time she will even look at you while she does it, and if you hold neutral it’ll get old to her. It’s so funny though they’ll do something and totally look at you, but dint take that as a sign to engage negatively. Also be consistent. If you don’t want her with your phone, don’t let it happen sometimes. It has to be an all the time rule. I read a lot from just googling this stuff but for me most of this works most of the time! I’m sure more strategies will be needed as they get more cunning.

I try to talk to her in a serious tone and 30% of the time that works.  The rest of the time I have to distract her or move her to redirect her attention.  Every now and then I have to take something from her and prepare for an epic meltdown!
