Will you allow your baby or child to trick or treat?

My partner and I aren't sure if we want to allow trick or treating. There are so many crazies out there who DO have the potential to harm/poison children. We are considering just letting our son go door to door, and then giving away the candy afterwards- and buying him sweets ourselves. Or maybe just not trick or treating altogether, and instead, going to a pumpkin patch or little Halloween festival so that we still do something. Is this weird? Is anyone else a first time parent and feel this way? Thanks

A lot of the "dangerous" candy tends to be tall tales or people who are targeting specific people. You can Internet search the best neighborhoods to go which generally are popular and known to be safe. In other words just choose where you go wisely.

Alot of churches and our fire department do a trunk or treat. But since I know most of our neighbors I took my son for the first time yesterday, he loved it.

It's very uncommon to find something wrong with candy. Most of the stories are people who have done it themselves to get attention. My oldest is 16 and we have taken her out every year and not once have we found anything wrong with her candy. We look thru and throw away anything that has been opened and that's it. Take the kid! It will be fine!

You know the only documented case of anyone poisoning candy was the father doing it for the insurance money, I would say let him do it, but inspect the candy first.

Its not hard to go through candy and pick it the suspicious stuff. Besides, or kiddo is almost 3 so he's not eating much candy. It's mainly my husband and I who eat it. Don't be a kill joy. Let your kiddo dress up and join in on the fun.

We let our son trick or treat but just like my parents did for us we dump all candy at home on the floor and then sort it into piles like chocolates, chips, etc and we inspect all the packages and if any look suspicious we chuck it no questioning it. If it's in a different language (we have a lot of Chinese people in our neighbourhood) we chuck it as well. He also gets hard candies he can't have so we chuck those too.
It's mostly being smart about the candy and stuff really. In 26 years I've never had any problems with doing it this way when I was a child and now for the last 4 years my son's been going out we've never had a problem with him either.

Yes it's a scary thought of something bad ever happening to your child but you have to let your child live you can't be overprotective you have to let them experience life if you take that from them they could definitely resent you ...

Just yesterday there was an incident in a large city near me in which parents found needles in their children's candy (yes, this is from a reliable source, and it happened to multiple kids) so your worries aren't unfounded. However, if you live in a close-knit neighborhood and trust all of your neighbors, I don't view it as unsafe. Just make sure you give the candy a once-over before you let your child eat it. However, if it sounds unrealistic or if you know your child would be trick-or-treating in an unknown area, I don't think it's a bad idea to bring your kid to a safer celebration like a fall festival or something. If your kid can do something for the holiday, he/she won't feel left out of the fun his/her friends might be getting.

I take my kids but we no longer go door to door because the cheap ppl in our area really don't give anymore but there are a couple other things we do ..we do trunk or treat at their school and also in a town over they have a one way boulevard that they close down and the shops give candy..

I don't plan on going door to door since where I live it's very uncommon. I will take my child to the mall and sorts where they give children candy.
