Wedding thank you notes - only for guests who gave gifts/money?

Hi all,
We recently got married and I’m in the middle of writing our thank you cards. My husbands immediate family (2 sisters and his dad) didn’t help at all with the planning, and didn’t give us a gift, money, or even a card. 
I’ve read online that you only need to send a thank you if given money or a gift, is this right, or do I have to thank them for coming and eating the free food and drinking the free booze?
(I don’t need comments about being selfish and wanting gifts...tbh I don’t want anything from them, but I was disappointed for my husband because my family were quite generous, and his family couldn’t even spare $2 for a card for us to have as a keepsake)

I thanked everyone who came. We received very few gifts but that's not why you get married.

Don’t use thank you cards as a passive aggressive way to show disapproval toward people who didn’t buy you anything.

To be honest it’s completely up to you. There’s no set rules out there that you have to follow!! You don’t have to do thankyou notes.... 
You could always compromise and do a much more generic “thankyou for celebrating with us” for those that didn’t give you gifts or money. And make more personalised ones for the ones that did give you gifts?🤷‍♀️

I'd send them to all attendees. Even if they didn't give a gift.

Generally the reception is considered a “thank you” to the guests for celebrating with you. Thank you cards are for those guest you want to thank for a gift.  Especially if you provide a nice meal and open bar the reception is sufficient enough of a thank you if no gift was given. Since they’re family you could always thank them in person for being with you.

I would send to everyone, and write something like: thank you for coming and making our day special.

We thanked everyone. And wrote a part in there about how their gift was appreciated and will help us with ... Something to acknowledge their gift as well.

If you know they were there, I would send a card.
