When does one typically start paying for daycare?

So we are looking at daycares now. Taking tours monday and Tuesday. 
One place would have use pay the weekly rate about 6 weeks before we needed it cause "that's when our fall semester starts". Is this normal? It doesnt seem right for infant care. Like I dont want to pay a month and a half for something I dont use. 
The other two places we called never mentioned anything like this, so I hope it means we would only start paying once we actually place the baby in the daycare.

We paid when she went. A registration fee to keep her spot but we signed her up about 5 months before she actually started. 
It seems weird for them to require payment when you have t even started. I’d look elsewhere

I’ve always had to pay a down payment to reserve my spot, which was I think $100 each time. Then start paying our full rate when baby starts.

Thats sketchy as fuck dont go there. You pay a regiatration fee which ia like 25 or 50 bucks to hold the spot for a month or up to 3 months, and you pay your weekly rate when the child starts. Typically you pay on fridays when you drop the child off or pick up. Some daycares do a montly pay but most have you pay weekly every friday or whatever last day of the week the childs there.

In Australia you don’t pay anything till they start. You don’t even pay a fee to hold the place.

We had to pay registration, enrollment, and Secretary/filing fees, which total was $200.
Then, payment was due every Monday upon drop-off unless prior arrangements were made. So, every Monday at drop-off we had to pay X amount. If you didn’t pay with drop-off they wouldn’t accept the child. You paid full-time or half-time (whatever your kid was enrolled as) for the week, regardless of it they showed up on their scheduled days.
