Buying a new car.

We’re thinking about buying a new car. We only owe $2700 on my car and will be waiting until it is paid off. We owe $7000 on my husbands car but it is having a lot of problems. I’m worried something major will happen to his car and it become unreliable. We’re trying to decide between a used Avalon ($20k, 59k miles), used Highlander ($30k, 24k miles), or new Highlander ($40k, 16 miles). My husband makes $18/hr and I make $26/hr. I have $9k in student loan debt and my husband has $25k in student loan debt. Our mortgage is only $611/month. Which car would you go with if you were in my shoes? My dream car is the brand new highlander but I’m not sure I can justify $40k on a car. We have 3 dogs (soon to be 4, we’re getting a new puppy!) and no kids yet but we are TTC and plan on at least 2 kids.
