How do you respond?

How do you respond when someone of the same sex says “you’re so pretty...” or “you’re really beautiful” when you do not consider yourself very attractive and struggle with self confidence?

I always feel really awkward when a girl says this to me, I do not enjoy extra attention on my appearance and never know how to follow after someone says these type of things.

Also, what can you say after to the complimentor if you don’t think they are good looking and want to avoid the “thank you too” response?
