Pain after c section

Ok I know I'm supposed to wait 6 weeks but the bleeding stopped and it's been a little over 3 weeks since my c section and my husband and I tried to have sex, well it wasn't successful it really hurt and couldn't even go all the way in! I was really surprised as I thought a c section meant it shouldn't hurt down there? I should mention we probably didnt have sex for about 2 months or so at the end of my pregnancy because I was a big round uncomfortable bowling ball lol so is this just because I havent had sex in a while or is this normal after a c section?
