Feeling financially insecure
This is probably going to sound dumb but I feel so insecure financially compared to my boyfriend (we live together). He's 2 years older than me and right out of college he had a job offer making good money then a year later got a job making almost 6 figures. We both went to the same college but very different fields (him software engineer, me health sciences)
I originally wanted to go to med school but wasn't sure by my senior year and didn't want to get into $100k+ of debt if I wasn't 100% sure I wanted to be a dr. So I worked for a year in a clinic and decided to go back to be a clinical Lab scientist instead. It was a 1.5 year investment for school to come out making over double what I was making at the clinic and doing something I loved (and able to do it anywhere in the country) so it seemed like a no brainer for me.
Even with the extra school I'll still come out only making half of what he does and normally it wouldn't really bother me because as long as I'm able to pay bills/have a bunch leftover and I love what I do then I'm fine. But the other day he made a comment saying "that's a lot of school to only make THAT much...why are you doing it?" So I said "because it's my passion? And as long as I make decent money and love what I do I'm content" then it got into a debate about him rather having lots of money and 'sort of' liking what he does vs loving what he does and making less money (I'm the opposite).
I don't really have a question but guess just looking for some reassurance that I'm not crazy or stupid or wrong for feeling somewhat insecure about our conversation. 😔 I've been feeling really down ever since our talk, like he undermined my efforts to do better for myself.
Edit:
I guess it would help to put some actual numbers in this. In my area lab scientists come out making around $50-55k starting salary so that's what I'd be making when I'm done with school in a year. Combined our household income would be around $150k ish.
Also I've been able to do this additional schooling by paying outright (I saved the year I worked full time and still working part time during school now) meaning no loan debt for me to pay off in the end.
