Surgery while pregnant

Ashley

Just looking for a place to vent !

Friday I woke up at 6am in severe pain.. I was 12 weeks 4 days so this was really concerning. I hopped in the shower and sat down under the warm water. This helped a little but the lain grew more intense. I was in so much pain I was about to vomit.

Terrified at this point I called my midwife, she called me back in less than five minutes and advised me to go straight to the ER. She said the symptoms sounded like an issue with my appendix !

Because of the pandemic I had to go alone. My fiancé stayed home with my 11 month old and my 3 year old. I drove myself 15 minutes to the hospital.

I was told to go to the back entrance where the ambulance usually goes. I parked in the only available spot which was a five minute walk to the door... walked through all the covid testing tents and rang the door bell..

Once I got in and got multiple tests ( blood, two painful ultrasounds, heart tests etc) and sat alone for five hours- they determined that I had appendicitis!

They said I needed surgery right away... I asked if my fiancé could be with me they said absolutely no visitors.

So there’s me, I’m pain and terrified alone with doctors in the full face masks, gowns and gloves wheeling me to my room. Unsure if my baby was okay, unsure of the outcome the surgery would have on my baby. No one to hold me and tell me it’ll be ok.

Now I’m a grown as woman of course but this whole situation is absolutely terrifying. I’ve had a miscarriage before and that was the last thing I wanted to happen in this situation.

Finally I went for surgery, I sat in the hallway waiting to be prepped in the dim OR floor, climbed up onto the operating table, got strapped in, mask on and drugs to go under.

I finally woke up but I was in a panic of course because I woke up to strange faces covered by masks. I wanted my fiancé.. I couldn’t speak because of the tube in my throat. I tried, I reached out, I wanted a familiar touch. Then I stopped breathing and I knew it was coming. I fought to stay awake and to breath.

They put the oxygen mask on I guess and I finally came to again, took me a while to realize what happened but the pain was intense.

I now had three holes in my stomach, and unsure if baby was ok.

I was told to wait until the next morning for the OB to come check on the baby.

I spent the night alone away from my family. Couldn’t sleep because I had to stay on my back.

Skip to the next day, we found out baby was ok! Strong heartbeat, movement, all was good. So I was sent home!

Now I’m home and with my family but still in so much pain!

I don’t wish this on anyone...!
