What age can you get your child’s vision tested?

Question

Everyone in my husband’s family wears glasses so I want to get my LO’s vision tested as soon as we’re able.
They did the basic eye test (shining a light) when he was a baby, but when can their actual vision be tested?
What age did your LO’s start wearing glasses if they needed them?

My son had his vision tested at 6 months.  They’ll do it again at a year.

I have worn glasses since I was a kid and my prescription is +10 (I’m blind). My eye doctor who has seen me my whole life said to get my son an appointment around age 3 if I saw no issues earlier than that. He just turned 3 so we will try to get one by the end of the year if COVID allows.

At my kids two year well child check, we asked her pedi to screen her vision. They used this cool machine that looked like a radar gun with flashing lights in it and it made sounds. My kid just looked at it and that was it. The screen showed she needed further testing so we saw a pediatric ophthalmologist (who had to dilate her eyes with drops and then look into them while holding different lenses over her eye) and they gave her glasses.

I have bad eye sight like really bad. I had asked my doctor this exact question and he said it'd usually recommend around a year old. He recommended I get her set up with an appointment.. She was 7 months at the time. When he did check her eyes he said that one eye may not have perfection vision and possibly an astigmatism. He said it was really hard to tell since she was so young and everything is still developing and what not. He said they don't usually provide babies with glasses because everything is still developing, but they would if there was a big difference between both eyes. Thankfully she didn't meet that criteria. She's 15 months old and we haven't been back due to covid so I'm not sure what has changed. I just hope she has good eyesight.

If have any concerns you can get your babies eyes checked anytime. They have ways of doing eye exams on infants. Just ask your doctor. They will do a basic check and make a referral if needed. There are milestones it vision and sight that your doctor can check for such as if your baby’s eyes focus, if they follow an object. After 6 months baby’s eyes should be straight ect..
