Does my 3 year old have a speech issue?
I’ve asked his pediatrician multiple times at every visit from 12 months until 2.5 years old and she’s always shrugged it off and said he’s just fine. But everyone else around me is saying no. My MIL especially is expecting him to be able to count endlessly and recite ABCs. He can count to 5 (we practice daily and that’s all he will count to on his own.) He also recites his ABCs if we do it first and he can recognize a few of them on his own like A B C and E.
We try so hard daily to expose him to letters and numbers but he just doesn’t want to say them on his own. He can sing songs out of nowhere while playing. His receptive language is amazing. He just chooses not to talk. He understands more than you think. He can also be super expressive when telling us a story. He tends to recall something that happened in the past or earlier that day and re tells the story and acts it out. He laughs at jokes. He understands language. But he doesn’t talk in full blown sentences and he pronounces things wrong. For the most part (95%) I can understand everything he says. Most people can understand him too. He says max 3-4 words in a sentence but it’s broken up. Like he says “mama, wake dada up.” Or “mama, sissy crying.” My MIL has been on my ass constantly and it stresses me out because I’ve spoken to the doctor and she says nothings wrong. Maybe nothing is, but I want to know if you ladies that have 3 year olds...does this sound on par? Maybe a little behind?
