Is this guy lying or telling the truth

So I’m looking for a roommate I found this guy on a roommate website and he said that in order for us to get a place we will have to look like a couple but to me that sounds weird and sketchy? He’s 30 years old I’m 22 it’s not the age that throws me off it’s the fact that he thinks no one will rent to us ? Is this an actual thing or is he making it up

Edit: What should I say because I’m starting to not feel safe about it should I just block his number? Or what do I say
