Advice from children with divorced parents?

Hello to everyone reading. My parents are getting divorced and I don’t know how to handle it. They’ve been married for my entire life (16 years) and I never thought this would happen. They’re high school sweethearts and it seemed like their love was a fairy tale come true. They never argued and they always loved each other. It’s actually a really painful experience. Knowing that I won’t have meals as a family again, or go do activities all together, etc. I would love someone to talk to about this that has had experience with this, so please pm me if you have any advice for me. My parents divorced when I was younger than you. It really sucks and is hard for the first while. But just remember a few things:
1. Just because they don’t love each other doesn’t mean they don’t love you 
2. They’re doing this because they love you and although it’s hard it’s what’s best
3. This is what they want and need to be happy. The hardest part for them is knowing that it hurts their children
4. Don’t worry that they’re going to be sad and alone now that they’re older. They have their friends and families and they have you. And many adults find their second love later in life! Both mine did, as well and my partners parents.
5. Change is hard, it’s normal. But it will lead to great new chapters that will become your new normal.

Hey there! My parents divorced when I was 11 or 12 and now I’m 22 😊 honestly it’s just something you get used to in the end really. It’s tough at the start because you are used to seeing them together but after a while you do get used to the new routine or new “normal”. 
You have to think about it in their perspective also, they are doing what’s best for the family in regards to tension and family dynamic. It’s a lot harder on younger people to be around a tense environment even if you didn’t know it 😊.
It was very out of the blue too, but I learned more things about what went wrong with them both as I grew up and I’m glad they aren’t together in a sense cause it was toxic in the end and they are much happier now than when they were together. 
The pros are you get 2 homes, you end up with 1 on 1 time with each parent that you probably didn’t get to experience, my dad took us to the cinema, took us out to dinner, made plans every single time we went up and they are great memories. My mum unfortunately worked but we did still spend time together when we could. But I would’t have it any other way 😊. If you need a chat I’m here too.

My parents got a divorce when I was younger so if you ever need anyone to talk to feel free to message me. Once you get older it doesn’t effect you as much. You learn to have 2 different family experiences. Things get a lot easier. I went there a lot of therapists and psychologists, medications etc. it hit me hard and rough when I was a child but now it’s super easy and just the normal now. My parents date other people and I’ve learned to let a lot go and let them be happy

I understand how upsetting this must be for you and im so sorry you are going through this. Sometimes parents dont show their children the ugly stuff. They wait until the kids are asleep or are gone before the arguments start. And sometimes maybe they dont argue but they just fall out of love and it is completely normal. I understand how upsetting this is but coming from a perspective of a child of 2 unhappy parents who stayed together, its not better. Things get better when both parents are happy. They both love you and although things may not be exactly normal, there will be a new normal and it will get better and easier to take. All you can do is be supportive and caring to both of your parents right now.

I was about 7 when my parents got divorced. It’s not easy, but it’s easier then seeing them not truly happy with each other. Both my parents have since been remarried, and as hard as it is I can tell they are genuinely happier with their current partners. I recommend not picking sides and keeping out of their relationship; their relationship with each other isn’t about you. If they start to talk about each in an unpleasant way just tell them you understand they are hurt, but their ex is still your parent and they need to respect that. I hope they can be friendly with each other for your sake, and it’s as smooth of a transition as possible. Honestly it’s a learning curve for everyone, but you’ll get through it.
