My doc said 6 months, but I have a pretty heavy family history of pcos and other things that can make it harder to Concieve and carry. I've been using opks and have yet to get a clear positive, so we aren't sure I'm actually ovulating at all...I started temp tracking and testing with opks three times a day from the day after my period until it starts, just so we can try to pinpoint issues of there are any. If we don't see anything for the next cycle of doing this, medication will be our next step. I'll be 25 in February and it will be month #7 for us of trying.

I did not need it, but when discussing TTC with my doctor she said it is normal to take up to one year to conceive, and if not pregnant by then we could discuss other options.

Yes. Clomid has negative effects on your uterine lining and shouldn't be used the second you feel like you're having issues conceiving. It thins your uterine lining over time and can actually make it more difficult for you to not miscarry. That's why your doctor will have you try for a year, they want to be sure that the pros outweigh the cons.
