People are either male or female. Xx or xy. It is not offensive to me, a female born woman, to be called female. 
Any word can be use in a derogatory manner. I.e. “lady” “ma’am” etc can all be said with a certain inflection that presents them as mocking. 
So no, I’m general, I do not take the word “female” as an insult. I am a female. However if someone where to be insinuating a sexist comment by stressing the word female, then I’d have a problem with the ideal behind the statement. Not the word itself. 
There is nothing wrong with being a female. Women rock.
