I’m just confused

The guy I’ve been talking to a year just told me he wants to be friends. Till he can get his life together and get in a better relationship with God. I know I should be happy and I’m not saying I’m not. It’s just a small part of me is worried if he’s just saying that so he doesn’t have to commit or have to take me on a date. Am I being too patient? That’s what my friends are saying but I just get bubbly when we talk. Even if it is just as friends.
