Those that have used a common name do you regret it?

We have a favourite but it’s super common our first child has a rare name I’m not sure if we use the common one or our second favourite

Not at all. I have an Olivia and an Eli, which I don't hear Eli quite as much but I believe it's still a pretty popular name right now. I am a Sara born in 1990 so there were always multiple Sara(h)s in my class, never bothered me. I never minded being Sara J. My daughter is always thrilled to meet another Olivia on the playground. Maybe she won't like it as much when she's older but for now she seems happy with it. I'm just in the camp of picking a name you like and of it's popular, so what? I don't really get hung up on the commonality of a name. My kids are individuals regardless.

I would never choose a super common name

I’m live very rurally. I have a Grant and will have a Scarlett. I’m a teacher and have never taught a kid with those names. I have had a ton of Lilly’s, Luke’s, and Jackson’s so those would be a no go for us. It depends on the name and more if it’s trendy than common. I know Scarlett is a little trendier than Grant but I don’t know anyone with that name or who named their kid that here.

My son is named Justin Tyler after his dad. I always pictured me and my husband having a little Justin running around(before we were even official😅) so when we found out we were having a boy it only seemed right that we would name him after his dad. I don’t regret the decision to do so it’s a good name.

I don’t use common names myself, but I have taught students who shared a name with multiple people in their class, grade, and many others throughout the school. This one particular time, I had two students who wanted to be called “Madi”, they both spelled their names Madilyn, and then I also had just a Mattie in the class with the same pronunciation. I came in halfway through the year, and the Madis went by “Madi”, and their last initial. Even though Mattie’s real name was just Mattie, unlike the other two, she had the same last initial as one of the Madis, so the teacher before me had the whole class pronouncing her name as “Mat-tee”. Mattie is an old way to spell the name and it should be pronounced just like Maddie. The poor girl hated this but didn’t dare tell her old teacher. I asked her if it would be okay if we called her by her full first and last name, and she agreed. She was so much happier!.. but she and the other Madis all expressed that they wished their parents wouldn’t have picked such common names. They all wished they didn’t have to share a name, especially with that many people. 
Anyway, I said all this because I think it’s important to remember that parents aren’t the ones that have to deal with having a popular name on the daily like their kids will. 
I myself have a name that I shared with other girls in my grade and in other grades, and I hated it. My name is very uncommon everywhere else, except for my hometown, and I found I liked it when I didn’t have to share it with people. It got confusing for me, just like it did with my students who also had popular names.

I have an Elijah and I know it’s on the top list, but I honestly didn’t know that or check that list before we named him. I’ve never met another Elijah in my life and I was born in 1992. It must be all younger kids who are named Elijah.

I have a Jackson, which wasn’t common when I named him that, and now it’s EVERYWHERE. But I love his name and wouldn’t change it 💕

We used family names which are common English men’s names. We have a George and Henry arrives in 10weeks or so. 
I’ve met a few baby George’s since ours was born 16m ago but not tons. All the others I know are older men. Although with playgrounds and daycares closed it’s hard to tell if he will be one of many Boys with the same name in his school yet. 
I see Henry on this app a fair amount but again not sure how many in our area are actually naming their son Henry. So who knows how many will be in his class. 
My husband and I both share super common 80s kids names and were always one of 2 or3 with the name in our classes. And although it annoyed us as kids, the family names that we also love were more important to us in the end when deciding.
