I think both a psychological exam to establish mental competency and a test similar to the ACT/SAT.

I wouldn’t disagree, but the testing needs to be completely unbiased and not affiliated with any political party. I could easily see that turning into a shit show too.

I’d be fine adding some requirements other than a mental test.  Such as requiring a minimum number of years (8?) served in a state or federally elected position and/or in a leadership position in the military.

I’m not sure how effective that would be. I know plenty of mentally unstable and abusive people pass those exams.

I think requiring a mental health evaluation could potentially set people up to be discriminated against for relatively benign mental health issues. I just wish people (Americans) would use common sense in electing leaders. At least half of us could tell long before the last election that electing a narcissistic, misogynistic, creepy reality tv “star” would be a bad idea - it’s only turned out to be worse because it seems like he may have some mental health issues on top of that.
