What to expect during delivery?

Question

I’m a first time mom and the closer it gets to giving birth, the more nervous I get.
What should I expect?
What questions should I ask beforehand?
What could I be aware of (ex: medications, etc)?

• don’t expect your water to break right away, you’re usually a few centimeters dilated and in active labor before your water breaks
• Contractions are the tightening and releasing of your uterus, that’s exactly what they feel like in the most painful way. If you want to do natural birth look into hynobirthing and have your partner look into ways to help you through labor (pressure points, birthing massages, etc)
• the ring of fire (when the baby’s head is coming out) burns like bloody hell, but the relief after is like a high 
• you have to birth the placenta after 
• look into delayed cord clamping and it’s benefits
• you’ll usually have a choice of epidural, IV pain medication, and/or gas
• make sure to ask questions about everything they’re doing, some hospitals will push unnecessary interventions unless you ask why
• it is usually better to tear naturally during labor rather than be cut, it heals easier
• don’t force yourself to push and if you don’t have the epidural choose a position not on you back, these things will help avoid tearing 
• look into the golden hour and it’s benefits

Its closest to death you come without actually dying. Don’t forget to breathe. This was my biggest problem. I was in so much pain I couldn’t breathe and forgot to breathe which caused hyperventilating

Make a birth plan. You might not use it and things could go the total opposite, but I just finished mine and looking at templates and reading some friends’ plans gave a lot of insight into the types of things I should know about going in.
