Covid-19 test said negative before being swabbed

So I was exposed to my coworker who just tested positive for Covid. I woke up today feeling really crappy and on my paperwork I had to fill out, my reference result said negative before even being swabbed. I’m super confused as to what that means? I always thought you didn’t get a reference range until AFTER you are tested for whatever and that it would either be positive or negative/normal.
