Makena/progesterone shots to prevent preterm labor?

I had a 25 weeker during my last pregnancy, and they couldn't find any reason for my preterm labor. My doctor suggested I do weekly makena injections starting at 16 weeks. Has anyone else gone through this before? I just read a study from October of last year saying that makena does not prevent preterm labor. So I'm unsure. What side effects did you have with the shots?

Hi Katie! I've been in your shoes and I hope that my experience brings you comfort. I lost my daughter at 23 weeks due to preterm labor and/or incompetent cervix. They don't know what caused what first and what was the reason for me to deliver so early. Fast forward 6 months later, I was pregnant again and I was on the makena shots starting at 16 weeks to prevent preterm labor ... I also got a preventative cerclage at 13 weeks for the incompetent cervix. At the time they were hesitant about putting a cerclage in bc they were so confident in the makena shots. I wasn't willing to take any risks so I wanted to do both. I ended up delivering a healthy baby girl at 38 weeks. 
I am pregnant again and was just told that now there are studies that show that they don't help. My opinion is, there isn't anything that says it doesn't work either so I want them. They worked for me ( even though I have no clue which intervention worked) a friend of mine lost two pregnancies 10 years ago same way and now has two beautiful children and she did the makena shots back then too (also did the cerclage, so really no way in actually knowing which worked) 
Even though we don't know which helped me carry my daughter to full term, I want both interventions bc I'm not willing to take any risks. I hope this helps you! I'm here to talk since we are going through the same thing. Message me anytime. Prayers to a healthy 9 months!

I’ve never done shots, only suppositories, but my levels are chronically low so I stay on them the entire pregnancy to prevent miscarriage and then preterm labor. It worked with my daughter and I had her successfully at 40+6

I went into labor with my twins at 23 weeks but they were able to stop them and keep me pregnant on hospital bed rest til 33 weeks. With my next pregnancy I got McKenna injections and weekly cervical length checks. I had her at 42 weeks so I think it worked!!!!I am 7 weeks 5 days now and I am being referred to maternal fetal medicine at my hospital for a consult to decide if it will be necessary this time. If they give me an option I will take them because I don’t want to take the chance of having another premie. Blessings to you!
