HELP! Switching to toddler bed

My 22 month old climbed out of his crib, opened his bedroom door, and poked my husband on the shoulder to wake him up last week! I removed the rail on the side of his crib and ordered a toddler bed conversation rail. I also put a baby gate on his doorway. But he keeps waking up around 2 am and crying. I tried laying on the floor next to his bed, but he just lays on the floor with me! I eventually bring him to bed with me after my husband leaves for work at 4 am. Does anyone have any advice on how to train him to sleep in the toddler bed?!
