Things your toddler does to help with meal prep?

My husband just switched his work schedule, which means he’s no longer home before dinner to play with our 2 yo while I cook. We’ve been really struggling & it’s turned into our hardest part of the day. I’m determined to turn it around! And think getting him involved & giving him a task to do will help. I’d love some ideas of things your toddlers do to help in the kitchen! He’s 2 1/2 & pretty capable for his age.

In my daughters preschool they use these knives (they also come as plastic/serrated aluminum), those are great to start with!

This one is our favorite, works with hard and soft foods. They have to use a sawing motion to get through most food, so it takes some practice. But it’s almost impossible to cut yourself with it, has a blunt tip and is a great size for small hands. Plus it’s cute 😉

Honestly, we usually let him have his one episode of Elmo during dinner prep. But otherwise he likes to carry items from one place to another, he likes to stir, he helps empty the dishwasher, he gets stuff out of the fridge and puts stuff in the garbage. He helps more with breakfast and lunch because we are less crunched for time then and fewer dangerous items are used.

I got our daughter (3) a kids knife pretty early and she helps chop veggies, they are not really uniform but work for salads and stuff. She also gets things from the refrigerator, bowls etc out of the cupboard, whisks and stirs food, loves to pound and season meat, bread chicken; and recently wants to do the dishes while I cook, not really helpful though because she makes a huge mess lol. 
Most of the time it’s actually more work because I have to supervise and clean messes, but it does take the stress out of cooking because we’re having fun while being productive plus she learns 😊

My daughter just turned 2 and she helps me by putting sliced veggies in the pan or pot (whichever I'm using). She also likes to help season foods and can stir things while it's on the stove. And of course taste testing. She also attempts to help use the rolling pin and cut out dough, but isn't the greatest at it just yet so I give her her own chunk to work with while I do most of it haha.
