Do you feel describing hair as “nappy” is derogatory ?

I’ve felt it has a very negative connotation since Don Imus and the Rutgers Women’s basketball comment. My husband a dark skin PR man says it but I feel it’s along the lines of saying “negro” like extremely offensive.
Do you think kinky or coily - or evening “ethnic” hair is a more appropriate way of speaking? 
FTR: curly haired mama here but I’m white. I definitely don’t try to say that.

Nappy is extremely disrespectful! Kinky, coily is better. Hair texture/type is a very sensitive topic our culture due to society insinuating that our kinks, curls, & coils are wrong for centuries. Thanks for asking instead of taking your husband’s word for it.

I feel like nappy is one of those words where I can describe my own hair as ‘nappy’ but I know I will take offence if someone else tried to.

I grew up with "nappy hair" describing someone who doesn't take any care of their hair, like you can see the dandruff falling out and the hair look painfully dry. 
I've never used it before cause I've always known it's not my place, but that's my experience with the term

Depends on the context like if it's being used as an insult yes. No one can make me feel bad about having nappy hair. It's a texture.
