Let’s talk tablets

Question

My son is 4 going on 5 and I’m finally thinking about getting him a tablet for car purposes or for some “tv” time. (He’s a toy kid barely watches tv but likes to find videos on YouTube kids and play/ pretend he’s got his own show) 
Ive seen 
iPad 
Leapfrog 
Kindle kids edition 
Any mamas have any of these? Can you give some pros/cons to whichever tablet you have or if you have one that isn’t on the list please share. 
Im looking for info on durability, parental controls, ability to download apps like YouTube kids.

My kids all have this one. They have kid YouTube videos on it my 2 year old watches blippi all day and then other things.

We had tablets for our kids, eventually took them away and now have a desktop. If you're not really spending much time in the car, there are advantages for so many reasons. My kids are really good kids, and would turn on allowed shows on youtube, but then the stuff that came up on the suggested next videos were horrendous. I'd be busy with my own stuff and eventually "catch" them watching terrible programs, and one of my sons admitted to being scared by it.  I tried reinforcing the "only watch A B and C that you know we allow" but it kept happening. Lots of time wasted on nonsense and me having to discipline otherwise great kids over their tablet usage.  It also isn't good for their spinal development to be always looking down. We are much happier with the desktops. Just a suggestion based on experience.

My daughter will be 3 and we have an 7th gen iPad for her. She has an outer box case and a glass screen protector that has worked great. I can easily hide apps on a different screen so she doesn’t go into them. It allows Netflix and kids YouTube that she watches in the car. And it’s good since I have an iPhone so if I leave her upstairs in her room and I’m in kitchen doing something she knows how to FaceTime me if she needs me. (FaceTime is the only communication app she’s allowed and I have family numbers already stored).

my son has an ipad that i use in the car, and to cast to the tv when i’m using my phone and vice versa. the trip to my parents house is a little over an hour, so it’s always Moana or Mickey Mouse Clubhouse lol he’s only 1 but i plan to child proof it as he gets older. i got a headrest stand for it off amazon for $20 and i LOVE it. i’m pretty sure i got the ipad on black friday so i may suggest waiting until then if you can. and definitely get a case. my son knocked it off the stand on my parents balcony and it fell through the railing and it was the DAY i got the case and like 4 days after i got the ipad... not a dent on it and my heart is still recovering lol
