My ex and I came up with an idea... trigger warning ⚠️ want opinions please

We were just bullshitting and I can’t say who came up with what portion of it... it’s a story we chatted about back and forth over the course of 6 months.

Anyway, I write, and I went ahead and penned a pilot and all, and my cousin is an animator so we decided to collaborate on several small projects.

I think the story we came up with is pretty funny and I want to include it but I genuinely don’t know how much of the original ideas were his vs. my own.

If my life is a secret fairy tale and I end up making money off of it (I’m exaggerating. Surely someone will watch it and we’ll make SOMETHING off it even if it’s $5) I wonder what I owe him. Or if I need his permission to start with (not that any of us have proof of talking abt the idea together, I just care to do the right thing).

No way can I get a lawyer to consult, bc I don’t have the funds. Period. I have tons of other things to worry about financially that I would never place his interests above.

Anybody got any advice?

We aren’t on speaking terms and I’m not willing to have any sort of relationship beyond sending a necessary check... he was extremely abusive and it almost cost me my life.

Do you suggest I just abandon the story altogether? I want to have it animated very badly.
