Does God really have something bigger and better?

Question

I came across this on Instagram and I’m not really sure why it bothered me so much. Not just the “god is a white man” debate that was all up in the comments, but the message it’s portraying. I was debating with my teenager about something like this awhile ago ... we have all we need and don’t feel the desire for bigger and better. I mean, bigger and better would always be nice, but it’s not necessary. Like the girl in the picture ... she loves her teddy bear. Maybe it was a gift from someone who passed away. Why would we automatically assume she’d prefer the bigger one?  Why would GOD assume she’d want the bigger one??  
I get the over all concept of the message I guess, in that if we trust in God he will giveth, and to let go of attachments that you’ve maybe outgrown. 
Maybe I’m tired or something, but this is really really bothering me lol. I feel like the image is showing the opposite of what the typed message is trying to say.

I think messaging like this meme misunderstands what Jesus is about. His message isn't about having bigger and better things - that's a false prosperity gospel, in my opinion. What Jesus offers is salvation, forgiveness of sin, and the promise of eternity spent with him. The bible doesn't promise that we're going to get all kinds of bigger and better things here, it actually preaches contentment with what we have and self-sacrifice. I don't agree with the notion that Jesus is some sort of cosmic Santa Claus dispensing presents to people. That's not the gospel and it's a dangerous message to promote.

i truly don’t know. but i’m not religious so i guess that’s where my skepticism comes from. 
plus, i’m not sure how God can have something better planned for you, when at the same time we apparently have free will? the two contradict each other in my opinion. 
because if God did have better planned, why would anyone be stuck in truly awful situations?

I think you’re misunderstanding the message here. It’s an analogy. People will have good things, good situations, everything going for them and then something bad will happen. This is just life. Something bad always comes along whether we like it or not. This message is to remind people that something better is coming even when the things we love (or the people) are taken away from us.

I think it’s less about physically having “bigger and better”, and more about how sometimes we have to let certain things go in life in order to make room for the new things that will bless us even more. The teddy bear is a metaphor. It doesn’t literally mean that God will take away something small just to give you something bigger, even though He surely can do that if He wants. It’s more about how God knows our hearts and knows what’s best for us more than we do, He already knows whatever future blessings are on their way, and the point is we need to trust Him. (Lets also remember, sometimes smaller is better and more fulfilling. God knows this too) It’s about trusting God and giving Him control. 
As an example, I had a friendship with a girl for over 11 years. I thought it was good and I had a lot of enjoyable memories with her. Until one day that came crashing down and she no longer was my friend. I didn’t understand why and I thought I’d never find a close friendship like that again, but God showed me otherwise. Now I have a best friend who is even more amazing and adds more substance to my life. And there were things God showed me and taught me about how that past friendship actually wasn’t as great as it could have been.

I think you are misunderstanding it. It is  portraying having trust in Jesus. I look at it like he has bigger things in store for us too in Paradise. I always loved this portrayal and l think you are overthinking it a little bit.

In my religion, yes. If you pray for something you really want, god will answer in 3 ways: 
“Yes” 
“Yes but not now”
“No, I’ll give you something better”

The message of "bigger and better" is often used because most human beings are always searching for something better or to be better. Also, when you're feeling down it's sometimes helpful to think things will be better and it helps let go of what you're holding onto. Obviously, this doesn't apply to everyone, but it's a message that his home for majority of people.

This picture has been reported by some as controversial because it makes him out to be like a Santa clause. He can give you many things and give you overflowing love , but it has a two way relationship. You have to pray, fast, seek repentance (for all sins) and one thing I pray for the most is probably discernment and wisdom.

I don’t believe that god has a plan for each and every human so there’s something big waiting for solely you. He has a plan for humans as a whole but to say getting raped, tortured and dumped in a lake was apart of gods plan... weird. I don’t understand what people think satan is doing when they make it out to seem that god is so horrible with his “plans”
