Why do we prioritize there manipulation over our self respect

Why do we get into relationships with narcissists? They are incredible manipulators. They don’t present themselves as such. They tell a good tale and slowly show their true colors. All that manipulation fucks with your mind. That’s why they get away with it and it takes forever to get out. We have to retrain our brains that their nonsense isn’t okay and we aren’t the problem, they are.

Im not married but people do it because the partner has manipulated them so much so they think they have nothing and can't be independent also alot of women become dependent on their husbands and would rather have them treat them like shit than leave them because they don't have anything

not married, but engaged. Ended it after 3 years. The behavior doesn’t usually come out right away, and it doesn’t come out all at once. Part of the manipulation is that it isn’t bad all the time either, and often they flip back and forth between sweet and charming and then manipulative, controlling, etc. At first it wasn’t too frequent, and I thought if I had to deal with him acting like a jerk or bad fights every few months, fine - it was worth it to be with the good side of him the majority of the time (yeah, I was pretty madly in love with him). Then it became more and more frequent, and the good times weren’t even as good. Towards the end, I was completely miserable almost all the time, I never knew when his flip was going to switch. I thought he may have bipolar for a while, but he only ever acted like that with me and that’s when I knew. I tried to leave a few times during those months, but the manipulation doesn’t stop. I think he could tell a few times when I was actually close to leaving, and suddenly he’d be the guy I fell in love with again - sweet, charming, attentive. So I’d stay and soon enough it would start again. He messed with my mind too, saying I was dramatic or that wasn’t what happened or things never happened at all, to the point I genuinely questioned my memory at some points. He’d break up with me for control and later pretend it didn’t happen or to “take me back”. The thing is it always escalates. I finally left, packed a bag and my puppy and I were out while he went to the store one day. I’m pregnant, which is partly why I stayed the past 3 months, but finally I realized it was best for both of us to go. 
Unless someone can recognize their narcissistic tendencies and put work into actively preventing it, that relationship won’t be healthy.

I was in a relationship with one for 13 years. I couldn’t identify exactly what he was until after I left. He’s a HUGE manipulator. I have a son with him. But I am soooo glad I left. I flourished from the time I left that relationship. What is crazy he mention not too long ago he enjoys manipulating people and he gets a thrill and high off of it. He explained it as mind control over people. He’s really a sick **** and messed up in the head. He got mad at me not too long ago and said that if I didn’t do something he was going to start manipulating our son. So what does that tell you? I played nice until it was time to go pick up my son 2 days later and 4 hours away and haven’t talked to him since.

I almost married a narcissist, he had the ring and we talked about planning the wedding & our lives.
Well, thank goodness I bailed and wouldn't commit to it fully until we worked out some serious problems. 
If he could have kept his cool a bit longer, I'd definitely be married to a narcissist. 
Narcissist or not, emotional abuse & manipulation are inexcusable, especially to deal with on a regular basis. 
Setting boundaries and grey rock to avoid unnecessary conflict may help you cope in this relationship- but I also have to advise you leave because living that way is really bad for your mind in ways you may not be fully aware of until you leave. I would understand staying if your partner is serious about getting help & changing- thing is, unless he is doing so on his own without you saying you will leave, I would 1000% not trust it.

I never married, but in a very complicated relationship with one.
I didn’t realize he was a narcissist till after the final time I left and blocked him.
It was so scary to read about narcs and realized he checked off every box.
I can’t even imagine how my life would have ended up if I continued that relationship. 
I would be a broken person for sure.
