Playing games?

Need some advice. I’ve been talking to this guys since August 16. He would always text me first, ask about me and learn about each other, He’s been very funny and sweet and he asked me out on a date but it never happened, I got sick and we were embarrassed to bring it up since were shy people I guess. However, the days that were up to this date he would give me mixed signals like take an hour or more or 30 mins to respond, look at my Instagram story late to make it seem like he doesn’t care and sometimes he would stop texting me for 2-3 days and then again. So then I would text him to talk and we would talk, it would be fun but then I decided to not text him and just wait until he would so that I don’t look desperate. But also other than acting weird he would be the sweetest to me at the same time and tell me things that would make it seem like he likes me such as complimenting me saying I’m preety and that I’m worthy and that I look amazing on the pictures I recently posted, stuff like that. Then days later we stopped talking a lot, it turned to not hearing from him after 4 days and then a week and just two days ago he texted me. He replied to a story I posted of my dog and we were talking. He was answering quick and he was complimenting me again and being sweet but idk what he sees me as. He hasn’t talked to me since two days ago & idk what to think. We never told each other straight up that we like each other we’ve just shown it via texts but ik that he knows that I like him. However idk it seems like he’s playing games. But I’ve been understanding because we learned about each other that we were both in a relationship for five years and it’s been 3 months that we’ve been separated from our exes. So I was like maybe that’s why he acts this way cz maybe he still has feelings for her and doesn’t want an serious or probably wants to stay alone to heal. But idk I never asked him directly why he acts like this because I don’t want to scare him off. What should I do?
