Saving pictures

How do you guys save all your kids pictures? I have been doing phone dumps onto an external hard drive but it sucks because I can't just look at them whenever I want. And I always worry the hard drive will fail. My laptop is old now and can't hold all the pics. I don't trust the cloud because I don't want people gaining access to my kids pics. And printing is ideal but it costs literally hundreds of dollars because I have thousands of pics. What do you all do?
