Do you separate the art from the artist?

Piggybacking off the post below about the business selling Harry Potter underwear - 
If you find out a writer/artist/musician/actor you like is a terrible person, do you continue to consume their art or do you avoid it completely? 
Do you look at it differently when someone does something violent and harmful, like rape or domestic violence, versus simply having a distasteful opinion you don't agree with?

Humans are fundamentally flawed at their core. There is no one who is perfect or even close to it. We lift many on a pedestal, only to find out that they are not who we thought they were. No one could survive a  true cancel culture.
However, at the same time, every time you purchase something, you are casting a vote for that product or service. In a capitalist system, you are constantly voting. But instead of using a ballot, you’re using your wallet. True democracy. I guess you have to decide what is more important for you when you cast your vote. Is the value and quality of this art or product worthy enough to support it despite the other flaws with the company or person associated with it? Because trust me, every company has an issue you could find if you looked hard enough. How far is to far is a personal choice.

If it’s just a personal opinion that I find distasteful or disagree with, then I have no issue with it.  However, if they have accusations of harming people, or fund or donate to causes which actively harm people then I do not give them anything that will add to their wealth. Whether that’s purchasing their products or giving them clicks. For example, I won’t buy any Chick-fil-A until they pledge to stop donating to anti-LGBTQ+ causes and I would never purchase an R.Kelly album.

I avoid it.  I feel like you can’t support the art without supporting the artist.  I had something similar happen to me a few years ago.  I discovered Jeffree star cosmetics and loved the make up, but soon found out he was like the biggest piece of shit, so I no longer support his brand.  I did the same with KVD as well.
I actively research anything before I consume/purchase now because I don’t want to support shitty people.

I really do try to in some situations. When it comes to films, sitcoms or projects directly involving more than one person, I do separate as much as I can. Socially "cancelling" projects like these could mean innocent people are left out of work if these things are taken out of production, which has happened many times.
When it comes to music, its easier for me to just "cancel" that person. For example: R-Kelly. His music is something I can never and will never listen to again, especially after growing up to find our that his lyrics are referring to underage girls. He wrote many of his own songs too, so either way its mostly him who is losing out. I get that there are producers and ghostwriters but they aren't exclusive to one artist so they won't be losing any money because one of their clients is now "cancelled".

I can’t separate them. For example (there are tons) I can’t watch a Mel Gibson or Roman Polanski movie or even listen to Michael Jackson.

I don’t think about it tbh...many people are into cancel culture and avoid them 100% but I can’t/don’t since I don’t care enough to know who the person is or what they did. If I like it I like it, if I don’t then I don’t. A lot of the top classic artists had a ton of issues yet are still popular 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have to separate the art from the artist, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to enjoy almost anything that I like. Celebrities are shitty & selfish people generally, so I’m not even surprised when one of them gets ‘exposed’ for being awful. Sometimes I’ll find ways to go around it, like watching the Harry Potter movies illegally so JK can’t get money from me, but I can’t do that with every single thing I wanna watch & listen to.

That's a complicated question that I am still working out. Especially with contemporary artists.
I think it's easier with long dead artists, writers, creators. Shakespeare was quite racist as was pretty much all of Elizabethan England, so it is something to keep mind when studying his work.
I like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant peach. But recently found out that Dahl was hard core anti semitic. 
I won't be buying anything new of Rowling's. But it seems to me like the fandom is big enough to be separate from the author. So I would have no problem buying fan art or something like that.

I mostly do. But it depends on what they did also.
A lot of people are terrible people. Like a lot of them. And they sometimes make art we like.

Sort of. It’s really hard to do because some people are just horrible but you already formed a strong emotional attachment to a movie they were in, or a book they wrote, or a CD or other piece of art. And I think that artwork becomes a part of you, and no longer speaks only for the artist. We create the art in our own heart and mind as much as the artist, that’s why we allowed it to reach us at such a deep level.
But everyone has different tipping points and I think that’s fine. We’re human. I can’t get passed crimes where someone did harm to another person. It sours their art and all I can think of is that, but other people might have deeper connections to that art, and it means more to them, so never listening or reading or watching it again would be like losing or ignoring a large part of themselves. But I think any future projects of the artist don’t need to be  supported.
